One-to-One Sessions

Filmmaking Training

Perfect for photographers looking to elevate their creative skills & incorporate the art of filmmaking in to their services.

THE PROCESS

Do you want to learn the art of filmmaking?

Do you want to be able to tell beautiful stories through motion?

Do you not know where to begin?

My one-to-one filmmaking training days are designed to help you turn that filmmaking desire in to a fulfilling lifelong passion & skill. Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, your time with me will be tailored to get the best out of you and your camera.

LOCATION:

The “technical” portion of training will take place in my home studio where I have a peaceful environmental space with all of the necessary equipment you need to get started.

We will then venture out for our practical element on a local filming walk or to a local makers studio (subject to availability) to put all of our theory in to practise.

Ending the day with the editing portion of the training back at my studio where I will have Adobe Premiere Pro (our editing software) ready to go!

My studio is located in Chelmsford, Essex. Parking available. Walking distance from a train station.

THE PRACTICAL ELEMENT:

For me this is one of the most exciting pieces of my training day as you will be able to take all of your new skills and put them in to practise straight away, on a local filming walk or at a local makers studio.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE:

Learn by doing. You will get to work on a real filming project and gain practical experience which you can translate to future films.

GUIDANCE:

Benefit from my industry experience as I guide you on a filming shoot and support you with any immediate queries that come to mind, live and in the moment.

LOCAL SUBJECT:

We will either head to a local area of nature to capture the sights and sounds all around us, or connect with a hand picked local Essex creative, who, subject to availability, you will be able to work alongside to create a short brand film.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

  • A full day of interactive tailored learning on how to begin your filmmaking journey.

  • A 30min pre-training call to talk through your learning goals.

  • A physical training guide full of helpful training reminders, tips & tricks for you to take home with you after our day together.

  • A nourishing lunch to fuel you for your filmmaking session.

  • A filmmaking walk out in nature or a mini shoot with a local artisan maker to put all of your new found skills in to action and create that all-important first short film.

  • 12 months of access to online video tutorials for you to refer to after our training day (editing based content).

  • A one hour follow up zoom call a month after your training day to go through any questions that arise after our time together.

What I cover:

The day of training is filled full of information for you to absorb:

  • The theory of filmmaking.

  • Setting up your camera and the key functions you need to master.

  • Filmmaking practicalities: Movement, Stabilisation, Hand-held Filming & Focusing.

  • The art of storytelling.

  • An introduction to editing in Adobe Premiere Pro.

For me the technical side of things is a really important part of your learning so that you understand the context of settings before you begin filming.

The practical side is when you will start to absorb all of those different pieces of information, bringing everything together. For this reason, the day is split between theory, and practical content.

IS ONE-TO-ONE FILMMAKING TRAINING FOR ME?

  • Do you dream of telling stories through motion?

  • Are you passionate about building a new skill alongside photography?

  • Do you have a creative idea that you cannot stop thinking about sharing with the world and movement will help you bring it to life?

  • Do you work better in a practical environment vs. an online course?

“The best education in film is to make one.”

— Stanley Kubrick

I am passionate about the beauty of filmmaking and nothing makes me smile more than a patch of dancing light, capturing natural laughter, or seeing behind the scenes of artisan creatives.

I’m all about beautifully styled films with a natural light look and feel, playing with light and shadows to add an authentic look to my storytelling. My work allows my clients to see their personality & feel their story.

Filmmaking is what I am passionate about and it’s something that I hope to share with you.

  • The training has been created for complete beginners to filmmaking. So if you know nothing about filmmaking then this training is perfect for you!

I do ask that you are a competent photographer, know your camera well and can shoot in manual. The pre-requisites for booking with me are provided at the time enquiry.

  • Because of the set up of the training there are a few pre-requisites I will confirm with you before you book. These include, for example, knowing how to shoot in manual mode for photography, owning a camera with movie mode, knowing your camera well and being prepared to do some pre-research on your camera settings. These pre-requisites are in place to help you get the absolute most out of your day with me.

  • My studio is located in Chelmsford, Essex. I am within walking distance from a train station. On street parking is also available.

The practical element will take place at a different location but within a short distance of my studio.

  • Yes lunch will be provided on the day alongside hot & cold refreshments.

I will discuss allergies and preferences with you before the day.

  • If 1x1 training is not for you, and you prefer an online course format, then I also run a 7 week online training course called Press Record, in collaboration with Lens Eleven. The next run of Press Record is in September 2024. You can sign up to the waitlist here.

  • The training days are an introduction to filmmaking so I cover everything you will need to get started in film as a beginner.

I do not cover what are considered more advanced aspects of filmmaking, for example, gimbals, artificial lighting set ups & sound recording. I can provide personal product recommendations related to these subjects on the day, if requested.

The options available within the world of film are vast and wide - this training has been created as your first step into that world!

  • I use Adobe Premiere Pro for all of my film editing. Within our training day I will be showing you an introduction to editing using this software.

On the training day itself you will have the option to use my computer / software if you have not yet signed up with Adobe, but post training you will need to subscribe to an editing software.

Alternative editing softwares are available but I do not cover these in the training day. I will only cover Premiere Pro.

  • If you would like to discuss me travelling to you, please just let me know at the time of your booking enquiry and we can discuss options. Travel costs will be chargeable.

Online Courses

An alternative to my one-to-one training days.

Press Record is my seven week online training programme which I run in collaboration with Lens Eleven. Find out more information about the course here. The course runs via the Lens Eleven online community platform, with weekly module releases and bi-weekly zoom calls.

The course is perfect if 1x1 training is not for you and you prefer a longer format, group based course structure.

The next run of Press Record is in September 2024. You can sign up to the waitlist here to be the first to know when course bookings go live.
